Information Regarding Foreign Transactions Made with Your Visa® Card
Some of our cardholders occasionally ask for clarification regarding the definition of a foreign transaction. Foreign transactions involve two important concepts. Understanding these two concepts can help you avoid fees.
One concept involves currency conversion. Our disclosures provide that currency conversion will occur when a merchant settles in currency other than US dollars. This means a currency conversion can occur even though the transaction is made when you are in the United States. The key is whether the transaction settles in a currency other than US Dollars, not whether you are physically located in another country when the transaction is made.
The other concept involves understanding when a foreign transaction occurs. Our disclosures use Visa terminology. Visa uses the term "international transaction" and defines that term to mean a transaction where the issuer of the card used is not located in the transaction country. This means an international transaction can occur even though the transaction is made when you are not in a foreign country. For example, a transaction made online with a foreign merchant is an international transaction even though made while you are physically in the United States.
Any fees we charge related to currency conversion or an international transaction (such as an International Service Assessment) are disclosed elsewhere.
